Liberty Press

Liberty Press of Jamie Ferguson,
Victoria, Australia

Liberty Press Jamie Ferguson bought this press, along with several other Chandler & Price and Arab presses, in the fall of 2014.

"After talking to the old bloke who I got my presses from, he said that he acquired numerous thrown-out printing presses in the 1980s in Newcastle, New South Wales, including the Liberty. However, he did say that he thought the Liberty may have begun its working life in New Zealand."

In addition to the usual 3 patents and extension found in the shield surrounding the serial number, this press has a plaque attached to the left side frame listing 9 additional patents: Nov 19, 1885; Febr 23, 1886; Aug 31, 1886; Oct 16, 1886; Oct 30, 1886, Nov 4, 1886; Nov 10 1886; March 3, 1887; Aug 16, 1887. No other Liberty has been reported to have these listed.

The serial number indicates a manufacturing date of 1887 or 1888, so this may have been one of the earliest presses that included the innovations represented by these patents. Weiler marketed this press as the "New-Style Noiseless" Liberty printing press.
